Damian Barrett has dropped an explosive update on last week’s story about injured Fremantle forward Harley Bennell being kicked off a flight.

Bennell was removed from the flight to the Melbourne to Gold Coast flight on Saturday after appearing drunk, and he told Fremantle that he’d been drinking the previous day and on an earlier flight from Perth to Melbourne.

The club blamed his behaviour on the “frustration and disappointment of not being able to play AFL football”.

But Damo said on The Footy Show that there’s more to the situation than initially reported.

“At some stage he’s also decided to mix a sleeping drug or sleeping drugs with that alcohol consumption,” Barrett said.

“That was the reason that airline staff felt compelled to remove him or ask him to be removed from that flight from Melbourne to the Gold Coast.”

Barrett said that the Suns were aware of Bennell’s behaviour before Freo, and that Gold Coast didn’t want its players spending time with him.

“Interestingly, the Gold Coast Suns, his former club, were the first to be informed of his condition by the airline staff,” Barrett said.

“They mistakenly thought he was at the Gold Coast Suns, and again interestingly the Gold Coast Suns did not need that call to be told of his imminent arrival on the Gold Coast.

“They’d been made aware of that by their players and they had in no uncertain terms told those players not to associate with Bennell in night time activities and nor to provide him any form of accomodation.

“So they’ve read the riot act about him coming even before this particular phone call.”
