Damian Barrett has given an update on Gary Ablett’s potential move to Geelong.

Ablett has made clear he wants to be traded back to Geelong at season's end, and the Cats are keen to have him.

Barrett says that the Cats will be doing whatever they can to get him home.

“He’s in a holding pattern until Geelong’s season is over,” Barrett said.

“But they will be in overdrive to get him across.”

But Barrett says the little master will come at a price.

“What the Suns are going to want is a good player from Geelong and for Geelong to pay for that player on their own list,” he said.

“That’s because of the forwarding of the financial side of the Ablett contract.

“He’s received already about $2.5 million of the $3 million of this deal. so they feel they’ve invested already into him.

“So Geelong will have to pay about $500,000 for Ablett and maybe up to $400,000 or thereabouts for another player to go to the Suns.

“That is their starting point for negotiations, and we know we can work backwards from there.

“But unless Geelong is prepared to at least partially go down that path in a way, this will get really, really messy.”

The Cats are about to play GWS for the right to host a home qualifying final.
