Damian Barrett says Carlton assistant coach John Barker is a "prominent" contender for a possible top Gold Coast job.

Gold Coast chief executive Mark Evans is reviewing the club, which will involve deciding on the future of Rodney Eade.

Barrett said on the Friday Huddle that, if the club lets go of Eade, Barker's name will feature to replace him.

"John Barker is a name that's really prominent now," he said.

"It's on the back of Mark Evans now being the chief executive officer of the Gold Coast Suns. He's going to, if not single handedly find the next coach - or re-appoint Rodney Eade, whatever he does in this space - he's going to have 95% control over what happens.

"It emerged during the week that he did endorse John Barker, when he was in the position of AFL football operations boss, to the Brisbane Lions when they were going through the process to replace Justin Leppitsch."

Judd endorsed Barker's capabilities, saying Carlton have been desperate to retain him.

"I think it's only a matter of time before he gets a senior coaching job," he said.

"If you were a coach, that Suns one would be a pretty juicy one to snaffle."
