Damian Barrett has pinpointed the James Parsons hit on Luke Hodge on Easter Monday as the moment that reveals Hawthorn's "lifelessness".

Parsons was suspended for two weeks for an elbow on the Hawthorn veteran.

Barrett said on the Friday Huddle the response to the hit was not something the Hawthorn of old would have tolerated.

"The exits of (Jordan) Lewis and (Sam) Mitchell, and what that has done by way of morale, and what it's done on the training track and what, more importantly, I think it's actually doing in the confines of the game itself," he said

"There's a lifelessness to this team that would not have existed had those two been there."

He said the Hawthorn of old would have targeted Parsons, instead of letting the elbow fly.

"I go back to the (James) Parsons hit on Hodge last week, there was no remonstration after it," he said.

"I can only imagine what Lewis would have done (to retaliate), had he been in that team this time last year, with his captain like that at the time, going down the way he did.

"There was nothing.

"I felt it was quite indicative as to where they've got."
