Collingwood’s season appears to be quickly slipping away from them but Triple M Footy’s Damian Barrett does not believe a decision will be made on coach Nathan Buckley anytime soon.

The Magpies slumped to their worst start to a season since 2005 on Tuesday when they lost to Essendon and given they have missed the finals the last three years, the pressure is quickly building at the Holden Centre.

It’s a long way back for the Magpies who are 1-4 and Buckley said last year that his job would be in serious jeopardy if he failed to steer the team to the top eight again in 2017.

But things will have to get a lot worse for Collingwood this year for Buckley to prematurely lose his job, according to Damo.

“They’re going to get as far into 2017 as they possibly can before anything is going to be done,” Damo told Triple M’s Rush Hour during the Midweek Rub.

“I think it’s the right ploy, too. History will tell you that if you are to make a call early on a coach it doesn’t get any easier from that moment on for the remainder of that interim capacity of that new person in.

“Nathan Buckley I think being the quality person and Collingwood person that he is deserves the entirety, or at least close to it, of the duration of his contact which is the end of 2017.”

Jason Dunstall added that one of the major reasons why the Pies have been so poor this year is that they are dysfunctional both in defence and attack.

“They’ve built a very, very powerful midfield. There’s good depth and good quality in there,” Chief said. “But there are holes, and decent-sized holes, at both ends in the key position stocks.”
