'Pathetic'

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield has weighed in on the jumper punch saga that has been a hot topic in footy circles in recent weeks.

The Brownlow medalist is critical of players who use the 'cheap shot' and he doesn't think there is a place for it in the game.

Dangerfield slammed jumper punches as 'pathetic'.

“I’m not a fan of the jumper punch, it’s pretty pathetic really,” Dangerfield told ARN.

“Players use it to their advantage in terms of what they can get away with. I don’t think it demonstrates the toughness of a player really. I think it’s pretty pathetic.

The biggest incident that caused a stir was when Fremantle star Lachie Neale received a heavy jumper punch from Richmond captain Trent Cotchin, yet Cotchin was not suspended.

“It really annoys me when incidents happen way off the ball. I just think it shows that players engaging in whatever act it is they’re just not as competent as other players and they’re using it as an excuse to cover up their own inability to get the job done around the contest.”

The AFL announced this week that there would be a crackdown on jumper punches after a number of questionable incidents that have been left unpenalised by the MRP and AFL Tribunal.
