Collingwood veteran Daniel Wells will go under the knife after injuring his foot.

The Pies have revealed Wells suffered high-grade damage to the Lisfranc ligament as well as bone separation in his left foot.

Wells, who returned to the field in the last term against Melbourne after his injury, has not been ruled out for the season, but the Pies admit the setback is "long term".

“Unfortunately for Daniel, an operation is required," Collingwood’s general manager of football Geoff Walsh said.

"We’ll know what that means, in terms of the rest of this season, after the surgery but it is reasonable to expect that it is a long term injury."

"Clearly, it’s a bitter pill for Daniel to swallow. He had spent a lot of time getting into strong physical shape and, back in the team, he was working his way into the season."
