Soccer megastar David Beckham got very close to coming to Australia to play in the A-League, according to player agent Lou Sticca.

In an interview with Melbourne Victory fan podcast For Vuck’s Sake, Sticca revealed that he nearly got Beckham down under in 2012.

Sticca — who was influential in getting Italian superstar Alessandro del Pierro to Sydney FC — said that Beckham eventually decided on a move to France.

“We had David Beckham very very close to coming out to Australia just before he signed with to play PSG (Paris St. Germain),” Sticca said when asked by host Jason Bevilacqua if he’d missed out on any getting big names to the A-League.

“That was when David Gallop (the current FFA CEO) had just started.

“Now that would have been a great acquisition for the game here, and he knew Australia because he’d been out here.”

Gallop came to the FFA in August 2012.

Beckham played in Australia with LA Galaxy several times, famously scoring a memorable free kick against Sydney FC in 2007.

Sticca wouldn’t be drawn on which A-League club Beckham nearly signed with.

“I’d probably prefer not to say,” he said.

Beckham moved to PSG in January 2013 before retiring from professional soccer in May that year.
