West Coast’s Dom Sheed was responsible for one of the greatest grand final moments in modern history when he calmly slotted the winning drop punt against Collingwood last Saturday.

However if everything had gone to plan, he wouldn’t have been on the ground to take the kick.

Speaking on the club podcast Eagles BACKchat, West Coast multimedia producer Steve Bandy explained that both Sheed and Liam Ryan were supposed to be off due to rotations when the decisive play occurred.

“Liam Ryan and Dom Sheed were meant to be off the ground at this stage of the game (during the last play that led to Sheed’s goal),” Bandy said.

“They were the next rotation and were set to come off, but they couldn’t.”

“The play was on the outer side of the ground?” co-host and ex-Eagles Sam Butler asked.

“Correct, they couldn’t get off the ground.” Bandy said.

“Thank Jeebus,” Butler said.

The other co-host, premiership defender Will Schofield, explained on the podcast how he nearly won the game off his own boot at one stage amongst other tidbits about the week and the game — listen to it here.

Tom Browne says that Melbourne are more keen for Jesse Hogan to go than Freo are to pick him up.
