Triple M Footy’s Dr Rohan White believes any game Cats captain Joel Selwood plays this year “would be a bonus for the Geelong Football Club”.

Selwood suffered a nasty syndesmosis injury to his ankle last week against Sydney and has subsequently required surgery.

The recovery time from such injuries can vary greatly with Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore returning after five weeks on sidelines last year while Carlton captain Marc Murphy missed the second half of the 2016 season.

And Dr White says Selwood has a battle on his hands to return to the footy field this year.

“He’s got a serious injury and we know it’s been pretty unpredictable in players,” Dr White told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Friday.

The Doc said Selwood would not be able to come back any quicker than five weeks’ time.

“It is called a high ankle sprain so it’s the two bones that sit on top of the ankle, which is the tibia and the fibula,” he said.

“It’s a bit like the wishbone of a chicken. If you split that apart, it tears the membrane that keeps those two bones together.

“So the integrity of the ankle joint is required to have those two bones closely opposed to each other. If you have split them, of course the injury is very sore, number one, and secondly the ankle is very unstable.

“The surgeon has put a little sling through and tightened that joint up. The only concern I have with Joel is that possibly he can come back in the ‘Libber’ type timeframe but he did have a couple of injuries that night.

“We did see him turn that ankle, he came off and we thought he broke something he was that sore. He needed two doctors to be taken off. I’ve seen him get knocked out and he refused to get assistance so this we thought was significant.”
