Triple M's Dr Rohan White says Joel Selwood could return from his ankle injury in time for a semi final or a preliminary final "at the very best", still believing any game he plays this year will be a bonus.

Selwood suffered a syndesmosis injury to his ankle two weeks ago against Sydney, an injury that saw him go under the knife.

The club is hopeful he can return for the start of finals, but White, speaking on Triple M's Saturday Rub, suggested that is unlikely even if he heals as well as he can.

"I’m sure for the Geelong supporters, their fingers are crossed," he said.

"Not a week goes by without a minor miracle with players returning: we of course know Dale Morris is playing today after three weeks with a wrist fracture, and of course Jesse Hogan coming back after that clavicle fracture."

White pointed to Western Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore, who spent 40 days on the sidelines with a syndesmosis injury, as the benchmark.

"40 days is the benchmark that ‘Libba' came back (from) with this sort of injury, and given that Joel’s surgery was about 12 days ago, this puts him at the very best into the second or third week of the finals," he said.

He still believes any game Selwood plays this season will be a bonus.

“I think diplomatically, I’ve said all along that any game he plays this year will be a bonus for Geelong,” he said.

“But it is Joel Selwood."
