Wayne Carey has said Nick Riewoldt is not "anywhere near 100% fit", and believes it might be smart to rest him next week.

Carey had the question mark over Riewoldt after watching him last night.

"If (McCartin) plays well this weekend in the VFL - I watched Nick Riewoldt last night, and I know Nick won't like me saying this because he's a champion of the game," he said on Triple M.

"But he has to be managed. He hurt his knee early in the year, BT, (he) had a shot from about 55 out which when he's completely fit he has a go at that. He put it to the top of the square."

Duck said Riewoldt and McCartin could be a straight swap next week against Carlton, provided McCartin backs his form up in the VFL.

"He was hobbling around, (he) didn't have his greatest game. I don't think he's anywhere near 100% fit.

"McCartin plays well (in the VFL), I'd almost say next week, Nick, have a week off, get your body a little bit closer to 100% fit (and) bring McCartin in."
