Wayne Carey says Nic Naitanui is a "really interesting" case, with his return coinciding with a likely finals campaign for West Coast.

Naitanui is pursuing a late-season return after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament late last year.

It seems like it'll be intriguing to see how the Eagles handle a Naitanui return.

"Nic Nat's a really interesting one," Duck said on the Saturday Rub.

"I've had my ebbs and flows with how I regard Nic Nat."

Duck called him the Cyril Rioli of ruckmen, saying he has a world of impact despite not winning a lot of ball.

"Nic Nat is the Cyril Rioli of ruckmen," he said.

"He doesn't get a lot of (it)...but Cyril Rioli does a lot with 12 possessions. Nic Nat does a lot with eight. And when he's playing at his absolute best, he takes three or four marks and maybe kicks a goal, follows up really well and gives his on-ballers great supply."

But Carey suggested there's a downside.

"When he's playing poorly, there's only one mark, there's no goals," he said.

"If he's going to come back and give you that, then they might be better off, depending on how (Drew) Petrie and others continue to develop, (Nathan) Vardy and these guys."
