2017 Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin joked Bruce McAvaney would have copped a don't argue at the Brownlow if he "was pissed".

Martin won the Brownlow in rampant fashion on Monday night, having it sealed up with a few rounds to go, allowing Channel 7 host Bruce McAvaney to approach him for a chat when he had the medal locked away.

Martin admitted on the grand final edition of The Footy Show he didn't know what was happening.

"He just popped up out of nowhere, he gave me a bit of a fright," he said.

"To be honest, I didn't know what was going on."

Eddie McGuire suggested Bruce should have copped a don't argue.

Martin's response had the audience in hysterics.

"I probably would have if I was pissed, but I was sober," he laughed.
