The VFL Women’s competition has undergone a drastic facelift for the 2018 season with eight new teams unveiled.

Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and VFL stand-alone side Williamstown will all join the league next year.

Meanwhile, the VU Western Spurs will now be known as the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda have taken Seaford’s license and will be known as the Southern Saints in conjunction with resurrected VFL side Frankston Dolphins and the Casey Demons have replaced Cranbourne.

The massive overhaul means the VFLW could go from a 10-team competition to a 15-team competition next season.

Reigning premiers Darebin, Diamond Creek, Eastern Devils, Geelong, Knox, Melbourne University and the St Kilda Sharks also participated in the 2017 season. They will decide whether they want to participate in the VFLW next year by the end of the month.

Carlton, Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne already have teams in the AFL Women’s while Richmond and St Kilda will enter the AFLW in 2020 along with Gold Coast and West Coast.

Other teams who already feature in the AFLW are Fremantle, Adelaide, GWS and the Brisbane Lions.

North Melbourne and Geelong will join the competition in 2019.

Essendon and Hawthorn were overlooked for AFLW expansion.
