A tough week for Western Bulldogs AFLW captain Katie Brennan has ended with her in a similar spot as Bob Murphy in 2016 — called up to the podium to hold the premiership cup aloft.

Brennan was famously suspended for today’s grand final against Brisbane, with a tribunal hearing and an appeal both unable to get her suspension overturned.

The case is now being considered for a run in front of the Human Rights Commission, but that didn’t stop the game going ahead and the Dogs winning a thrilling contest 4.3 (27) to 3.3 (21).

In her speech as the winning captain, stand-in skipper Ellie Blackburn made a point of calling Brennan up to the stage to help lift the cup, the same way Murphy was called up in 2016 when he was injured.
