Retiring West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie has explained what was going through his mind in the seconds before saving his side an elimination final against Port Adelaide last year.

MACKENZIE EXPLAINS:

Mackenzie, who this week retired due to injury, collected a loose ball metres from goal in last year's elimination final against Port Adelaide in Adelaide.

With the scores level, Mackenzie turned and crashed into the point post, ensuring the ball wasn't rushed through for a match-winning behind and giving the Eagles a chance to win, which they did in extra time.

He joined Mix 94.5's Dead Set Legends and said he wasn't too sick of seeing the replay.

"I was very sore after that! Great memories from it though," he said.

"I think I was actually pretty lucky the post was there.

"It wasn't on purpose, but it worked."
