Young Geelong big man Esava Ratugolea might miss the rest of the season after suffering what appears to be a broken ankle in the Cats’ win over Carlton at Kardinia Park last night.

Ratugolea fell awkwardly on his ankle in a marking contest early in the second quarter of the clash and had to be stretchered off.

Initial fears were that he'd broken his tibia and fibula, but Cats coach Chris Scott said after the match it was an ankle injury.

"We've got some serious disappointment around Esava Ratugolea's injury, it looks like that's a broken ankle," Scott said.

"(It's) significant, but not horrific as first thought.

"He'll obviously miss a decent chunk of footy and looks likely he'll need surgery.

Watch the incident here, but be warned — it’s graphic.

The Cats went on to win the contest 11.7 (73) to 5.15 (45).
