Essendon’s Irishman Conor McKenna has been forced out of next month’s International Rules Series against Australia due to an ankle injury.

The dashing defender hurt himself while training with the Irish squad in Ireland and is now sporting a moonboot.

The 21-year-old will be unavailable for the two-Test series against Australia which will be staged in Adelaide and Perth.

However, on the upside, the Bombers don’t expect McKenna to miss much of their pre-season training campaign.

“It’s obviously disappointing for Conor because he was really looking forward to representing Ireland in the International Rules Series,” Essendon football manager Rob Kerr said.

"Once he is out of the boot he will return to Australia to progress his rehabilitation.

“There may be some disruption to the early part of his pre-season but we expect he’ll join in full training fairly quickly.”

McKenna had a breakout season for the Bombers this year, playing 19 matches and providing devastating speed and drive off half-back.
