There hasn’t been much to smile about for Essendon fans lately but the potential return of livewire Orazio Fantasia could do the trick.

While key forward Joe Daniher has been ruled out for a month at least with osteitis pubis, Fantasia has provided some positive injury news for the Bombers.

The two-time rising star nominee has been sidelined for the past three matches with a groin complaint of his own but is on the verge of returning against Carlton on Saturday at the MCG.

"If he gets through training and again (is) passed available to play I would expect we will pick him," coach John Worsfold said on Wednesday.

The return of Fantasia is desperately needed for Essendon who are languishing in 15th spot on the ladder with a 2-5 win-loss record.

The 22-year-old booted a career-high 39 goals last year and made the 2017 22under22 side as well.

He has only managed two games this year due to knee and groin issues.
