Ruckman Shaun McKernan has been promoted to Essendon’s senior list just days out from their season opener against Hawthorn.

The Bombers will be missing Matthew Leuenberger (hamstring) and Tom Bellchambers is no guarantee to take on the Hawks either, which means they are pretty stretched for ruckmen.

McKernan had an impressive pre-season, averaging 15 touches, 15 hitouts and two goals a game.

The former Crow was delisted by the Bombers at the end of last season, but re-drafted in this year’s rookie draft.

Luckily for McKernan, he hasn’t had to wait very long to get another chance at the big time.

The 26-year-old has played 49 games and kicked 31 goals since debuting for Adelaide in 2009.

Essendon face Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night in a game that is expected to draw 80,000 people.
