Essendon defender Ben McNiece has a signed a new one-year deal that ties him to the club until the end of next season at least.

McNiece played eight of his 10 career games this year, with his best performance coming against Fremantle in round 18 when he collected a career-high 21 dispsoals.

The 26-year-old was taken as a category B rookie in the 2017 rookie draft as part of the club’s next generation academy, but his fledgling career has been marred by neck and hamstring injuries so far.

"With injury hampering his progress in his first season, it has no doubt been frustrating for Ben," Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said.

“Despite the setback, Ben has shown great determination throughout his two years on the list.

“He is a quality young man and we are excited to see what he can achieve in 2019.”
