Essendon have announced they will be sticking with the original recording of their club theme song this season.

It was revealed by Triple M Footy on Friday that the AFL had re-recorded 15 of the clubs’ songs, with the exception of Fremantle, GWS and Gold Coast.

The move provoked fierce public backlash, especially from fans of the Victorian clubs which are renowned for having their songs recorded by the legendary Fable Singers in 1972.

The popular songs have become part of the footy culture and fabric over nearly five decades.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Geelong have also announced they won’t be using the re-recorded versions of their theme songs.

Sydney and Richmond have opted to start using the re-recorded versions.
