Essendon's big VFL win over the Northern Blues was headlined by a big performance from returning young gun Jayden Laverde.

Laverde was playing just his third match of the season, with surgery on an ankle problem in April sidelining him for three months.

But he proved his fitness with a big bag up forward on Saturday.

Laverde slammed home six goals - two more than the Northern Blues managed for the day - as Essendon ran home 81-point winners.

He had three goals to three quarter time before the icing on the cake came in the last quarter, with three of Essendon's nine goals for the term.

Add that to 18 disposals, seven marks and five tackles and it's a pretty handy day for the 21-year-old.

Brent Stanton (38 disposals, two goals) also pushed his case for an AFL recall with a big day out, while fellow youngster Kyle Langford (26 disposals, four goals) was also on fire.
