Essendon performance coach Hayden Skipworth has outlined the likely contenders for Essendon's captaincy in 2017.

The Bombers have plenty of options, with leaders Jobe Watson and Dyson Heppell joining last year's captain Brendon Goddard in contention.

But, according to Skipworth, they're not alone.

"We're sort of spoilt for leaders at the moment," he said on Thursday.

"We got to bring on a few last year that we probably wouldn't have got to see in the leadership group with Zach Merrett and Joe Daniher, and they're certainly going to add to our leadership this year.

“But we’ve got Jobe (Watson), ‘BJ’ (Goddard), ‘Hep’ (Dyson Heppell), ‘Hooksy’ (Cale Hooker), ‘Hurls’ (Michael Hurley) – we’ve got some really super leaders so whoever's captain I’m sure they’ll do a super job, but the other guys will be just as influential, there's no doubt."

Skipworth explained why Essendon has taken longer to make a captaincy decision.

"We've purposely waited for longer to get the groups together and (have) everyone sort of feel each other out a little bit," he said.

"We're starting the process as of when we get back from our break. Like usual it'll be a player vote and then we'll go from there.

"We'll hopefully we'll have it done by mid-February."
