#FreeKickHawthorn is apparently back in full effect for season 2017.
Livewire Hawk Paul Puopolo managed to score himself a dodgy one today, getting paid a hands in the back free when he looked all the world like he should have been done for holding the footy against Adelaide at the MCG.
Watch it here:
It was reminiscent of a free kick he got against Adelaide at the G last year that ended in him kicking the game winning goal.
Paul Roos on TV was fuming, saying it was “as bad a decision as you’ll ever see in a game of football.”
The Triple M commentators were equally disgusted.
“That’s a shocker. That is an absolute shocker of a decision,” Wayne Carey said.
“It’s not a free kick. That is actually holding the ball if anything."
James Brayshaw felt the same.
“I agree with you, Duck. That’s an appalling decision,” he said.
Unsurprisingly, footy fans across social media agreed:
Not everyone was on the same page though, with Leigh Matthews of all people making a case for the free:
Even the umps couldn’t get the Hawks over the line, they ended up losing to the Crows 12.11 (89) to 16.16 (112), meaning Hawthorn are 0-2 at the start of a season for the first time since 2009.
