There are fears Hawthorn veteran Grant Birchall has a hairline fracture in his jaw.

Birchall copped a knock from Adelaide forward Tom Lynch midway through the first quarter, which saw him taken from the ground.

He tried to play out the game - and played well in the first half - but had just three disposals after half time.

Birchall went down into the rooms and ended up leaving the game early, with boundary riders Neroli Meadows and Dr Rohan White suspecting a hairline fracture in his jaw.

James Brayshaw said Birchall had left the game early.

"We're just hearing that Grant Birchall has left in a car with Brendan Whitecross, we assume it's to go and get a scan," he said on Triple M just after the siren.

"We hope the news is good there for the four-time premiership star."
