A former AFL player has reportedly been arrested outside a South Melbourne tattoo parlour on Wednesday.

Victoria Police have told Triple M that Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested a man following an investigation into alleged extortion and threats.

A 33-year old man from Thornbury was arrested in Clarendon St, South Melbourne at about 12.45pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say he is currently assisting them with their enquires and that the investigation is ongoing.
