Former AFL player Chris Yarran has reportedly been charged with assault and obstruction after being arrested in Perth overnight.

PerthNow and WAtoday have both reported Yarran was allegedly arrested in Perth on Friday night after a series of car thefts.

The 27-year-old reportedly stole a car after threatening the driver and crashed it.

"The driver was asked to pull over in Turnstone Street in Alkimos before being threatened and forced out of his vehicle," police said in a statement as published by WAtoday.

He then allegedly stole another car before being apprehended by police late on Friday night.

No one was seriously injured in the series of incidents.

Yarran, who was drafted with pick six in the 2008 AFL draft, played 119 games for Carlton, kicking 90 goals.

He was then traded to Richmond where he failed to play a game, eventually being released from his contract due to mental health issues.
