Normally a torn anterior cruciate ligament means your season's over.

Not for former AFL player Sam Michael.

Michael recently rucked out half a footy game with a ruptured ACL.

The 23-year-old was competing in a representative game for the NEAFL against the Tasmanian State League - which his side won 8.7 (55) to 5.8 (38) when he copped a knock to his knee.

"I went into tackle an opponent and my leg was caught in the front of the tackle and was hyperextended. The force of his impact went through my knee," he said.

He then hurt it again early in the second half when he was tackled.

"The hyperextension of the knee definitely would have flared and aggravated it and the second tackle is where I would have ruptured it," he told neafl.com.au.

"But it wasn’t hurting. I got up and kept playing out the rest of the game. It didn’t impede me too much, but I was aware of it.

"When you’ve got the adrenaline pumping through your body and you’re still warm, you don’t think about it as much."

Michael still racked up eight disposals, four marks and 42 hit outs.

He will miss the rest of the season.

Michael spent three years in the AFL, playing three games for Brisbane and two games for Essendon.
