Former Bomber Alex Browne has stepped away from football.

Browne, one of Essendon's 34 suspended players as a result of the club's doping saga, had signed for the Northern Blues in the VFL at the end of 2015.

But he informed his teammates and coaches last week he would step away from the game.

"It was a tough decision for him to make: it's probably coming to the surface now of the pressure and fall-out of what he’s had to go through," Northern Blues general manager Garry O'Sullivan said on the club's website.

"In Browney's case, we tried to do as much as we could within the parameters of the suspension and heading into this year: both parties went in confident that things would be ok and were really looking forward to season 2017.

"With what he went through in terms of the supplements saga and everything he’s had to go through, he's lost that enjoyment factor with football."

O'Sullivan said Browne had made the decision to "get some happiness back" into his life.

"Everyone understands, we’re certainly supporting him and acknowledge and understand where he’s coming from," O’Sullivan said.

"We’ve accepted his decision and as I said, we’re definitely looking to support him in whichever way we can going forward."

Browne played 11 games for the Bombers between 2011 and 2015 after being drafted with pick 48 in the 2010 draft.
