Former Geelong champion Garry Hocking has joined Collingwood as an assistant coach.

Hocking spent seven years as an assistant at Port Adelaide, and even took over the senior coaching reins for four games in 2012 after Matthew Primus was sacked.

Last year Hocking coached South Adelaide in the SANFL and he will now focus on stoppages for the Magpies next year.

"I’m extremely excited by the opportunity to join such a proud club that is rich in history," Hocking said.

"The club has a focus on creating sustained success and hopefully I bring a skill set that compliments the other quality coaches already in place and together we can achieve that."

Hocking had a distinguished playing career with Geelong and was one of the best midfielders of the 1990s, winning four best-and-fairests and four All-Australian jumpers.

He was eventually inducted into the Australian Football and Geelong Halls of Fame and was named in the Geelong Team of the Century.

Hocking played 274 games and kicked 243 goals for the Cats over 15 seasons before retiring in 2001.
