Former Melbourne rookie Cameron Johnston has secured a deal in the NFL.

Johnston, who was on Melbourne's rookie list in 2011, switched codes to pursue a career in American football.

The 25-year-old played for Ohio State before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent.

Johnston, a punter, was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award last year, awarded to the most outstanding punter in the college football system.

"Excited for the opportunity to sign with the Eagles!" Johnston tweeted on Sunday morning Australian time.

"Looking forward getting to Philadelphia to compete and learn!"
