Essendon rising star Andrew McGrath has reportedly put contract talks on hold with Bombers management.

It is believed that the offer that Essendon produced to McGrath and his manager was seen as inadequate.

With the Bombers having a successful trade period luring a number of star recruits to the club the salary cap appears to be getting tight.

McGrath played 20 senior games this year and was awarded the NAB Rising Star award.

McGrath's manager Robbie D’Orazio is hopeful that a deal can be struck early next year.

“He won the Rising Star, he was voted the best first-year player by the players, he played 20 of 22 home-and-away games and a final and he’s a special talent,’’ he said.

“So he’s a special talent and an impressive young man and I am sure we will be able to sit down early in the new year to look to extend his contract.”
