Former Richmond, Port Adelaide and Melbourne player David Rodan will officially begin work as an AFL goal umpire, it has been reported.

Rodan, who played 185 games for the three clubs in a 12-year career, has been named to officiate during the JLT Community series in February.

The 33-year-old spent last season umpiring, officiating in VFL matches and famously in the EJ Whitten Legends Game, igniting the crowd and doing the worm after a goal was scored.

Rodan had previously expressed his desire to become an AFL-level umpire in 2017, first pursuing it after his 2013 retirement.

"We'll see how I go," he said in 2016. "I'll obviously develop this year and then hopefully next year [I can umpire at the top level]."

The JLT Community Series kicks off on February 16.
