Former Aussie tennis player Sam Groth has signed on to play for North Heidelberg in the Northern Football League this year.

Big-serving Groth announced he would retire after the recently-completed Australian Open to play local footy and was true to his word, signing with the Bulldogs just a week after the end of the tournament.

He competed in the doubles tournament with Lleyton Hewitt, getting knocked out in the quarter-finals.

Groth — who peaked at 53 in the world in August 2015 — will link up with Boomer Harvey and brother Shane in 2018.

The club announced the news on Facebook today:

Groth still holds the record for the fastest serve in tennis at an eye-watering 263km/h.

North Heidelberg won the NFL division 2 grand final by 77 points last year to secure promotion to the top level.
