Carlton will blood No.3 draft pick Paddy Dow and three other newcomers for their AFL season opener against reigning premiers Richmond.

Coach Brendon Bolton says 18-year-old Dow is a certain starter for Thursday night's clash at the MCG along with recruits Jarrod Garlett, Matthew Kennedy and Aaron Mullett.

"It's a pretty special day for our footy club and particularly those four. We think they'll all add some excitement to our group," Bolton said on Wednesday.

Kennedy and Mullett joined Carlton from GWS and North Melbourne respectively in the off-season while Garlett was picked up from WAFL club South Fremantle after a couple of years with Gold Coast.
