Fremantle has confirmed James Hird is "one of a number" of candidates for a part-time role in their football department.

Talk circulated on Friday that Hird was approached by the Dockers to fill a role at the club, based in Melbourne.

The news was confirmed by the club on Friday night in a media statement.

"The Fremantle Football Club can confirm that James Hird is one a of a number of potential candidates to fill a part-time role at the club," the club said.

Hird has not been employed by an AFL club since quitting the Bombers at the end of 2015, following the club's doping saga.

Fremantle's general manager of football operations Chris Bond said the process was not yet complete and that Hird was one of many candidates.

“The club is going through a process to potentially appoint a part-time opposition analyst based in Melbourne,” he said.

“We are in the early stages of considering a number of possible candidates and that process has not yet been completed.”

Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe was supportive of the idea when asked on Friday.

"Is that right? That would be great," he told reporters.

"This is literally the first I’m hearing of it. He’s an idol of mine and that would be unreal.

"He was a gun...he impacted in big moments."
