Gary Ablett looks set to create history in season 2018 by becoming the AFL’s all-time leading contested possession winner.

Ablett (3516) currently sits just seven behind record-holder and retired Brisbane Lions champion Simon Black (3523).

That means Ablett needs just eight more contested possessions to surpass Black.

There’s every chance the 33-year-old could break the record before half-time against Melbourne in their round one meeting at the MCG!

Ablett returned home to Geelong in last month’s trade period after seven seasons with Gold Coast.

Before joining the Suns, Ablett played 192 games with the Cats in nine years, including two premierships.

He heads into the 2018 season with a career total of 302 games and 386 goals.
