Geelong has confirmed the worst for Aaron Black, with specialists confirming a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Black hyperextended his knee in a marking contest in the third term against North Melbourne on the weekend.

He will need surgery to repair the injury, according to Geelong general manager of football Simon Lloyd.

“We are all saddened with the confirmation of Aaron’s ACL injury. This is a disappointing result particularly after finding continuity in his football in recent weeks,” he told Geelong's website.

“Aaron is a popular clubman, respected by his teammates and coaches and an all-round great person to have around our club.

“The club will provide all the support possible to Aaron over the coming weeks and a rehab plan will be put in place once surgery is completed next week.”

Black had begun to find a home in Geelong's backline, playing the last three games for the Cats.
