AFL chief Gillon McLachlan has been spotted personally apologising to fans who were locked out of the first ever AFLW match.

Ikon Park reached capacity during the first quarter, with fans left stranded outside the venue.

Channel Seven estimated the crowd had reached as many as 24,000, with fans left standing in stairways to fit into the ground.

McLachlan went out at half time to announce the gates were shut, and address the disgruntled fans who couldn't make it in.

Triple M boundary rider Neroli Meadows suggested there were chants saying 'you should have sent it to Etihad'.

The game was originally moved from Collingwood's Holden Centre, which would have seen a paltry capacity of just 5,000.
