Gold Coast will be dealt a fixture blow next season, with Metricon Stadium to be out of action for the Commonwealth Games.

The Suns are poised to go a few weeks without any action at their home ground due to the event, according to an afl.com.au report.

A temporary athletic track will be installed at the ground for the Games, which will run from April 4 to April 15.

The ground may be out of action for longer, though, with lead in and lead out times necessary on either side of the event.

It also may affect Brisbane by ruling out the Gabba, with all of the state's buses dedicated to the event.

It means the Suns may be forced to play home games in Cairns, or play a majority of home games later in the year.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said he wouldn't want the Suns to sell games interstate.

"We wouldn't like them being sold to other states, moving them to a neutral venue would be our preference if you had to do that," he told reporters on Thursday.

"All the buses in Queensland will be used.

"(We) are looking at options in northern Queensland, we've explored Northern Territory, other venues outside major cities and there are challenges with all of those."
