Ben McEvoy has told Triple M’s Rush Hour that a good mindset and playing as Hawthorn’s “one out” ruckman have been the big contributors to his stellar 2017 season.

McEvoy was essentially kept on Hawthorn’s list this year as cover for the injured Jon Ceglar who has missed the entire season due to a knee reconstruction.

But the former Saint has exceeded expectations by being one of the Hawks’ best players and a key reason for their incredible mid-season form turnaround.

McEvoy hasn’t missed a game this year, averaging 12 disposals and 33 hitouts, and has booted a very accurate 12.1, making him a strong contender for the All-Australian team.

“I don’t think the new (ruck) rules hurt me probably and just being one out - we’ve only played one ruckman pretty much most of the year - (there’s been) a lot of opportunity I suppose,” McEvoy said.

“But as with most things in footy, it’s between the ears, so you get that right, you get your mindset right, you can get things going your way.”

McEvoy will next be in action for the Hawks on Sunday when they face Richmond in a do-or-die encounter at the MCG.
