Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne will play on in 2019 after signing a new one-year contract with the Hawks.

Burgoyne, 36 in October, was out of contract at the end of this year but his AFL career will now enter an 18th season at least.

The oldest player in the competition has played 353 AFL games, including four premierships with Port Adelaide (one) and Hawthorn (three), and currently sits in 14th place on the league’s all-time games list.

He now has the chance of entering the top 10 next year and could overtake Sydney great Adam Goodes (372) as the most-capped Indigenous player in history.

Burgoyne, who has suffered a pair of hamstring injuries this season, has played 12 games so far in 2018, averaging 19 disposals and kicking six goals.
