Hawthorn defender Grant Birchall’s day is over at the MCG in their game against Melbourne.

Birchall copped a knock to the knee in a marking contest and hobbled around the MCG for a few minutes.

He then came off and went straight down to the rooms for treatment.

Birchall took his place on the bench at the start of the second quarter with his right knee heavily strapped but couldn’t get back on the park.

The Hawks physios iced his knee up at the eight minute mark of the quarter.

"Birchall has ice both sides of the knee," Triple M boundary rider Michael Roberts said.

"Tracksuit top on - he's done for the day."

It’s a tough blow for Birchall; today was his first match back from a broken jaw he copped against Adelaide in round two.

Birchall’s loss hasn’t hurt the Hawks, they lead 6.5 (35) to 2.1 (13) early in the second term.
