The head of the AFL's integrity unit Brett Clothier has stood down after eight years of service.

Clothier has taken up a position with the Independent Athletics Integrity Unit and will be based in in Monaco.

The appeal of being part of a global sport and further career opportunity has influenced Clothier to make the move.

"Athletics is one of the few genuinely global sports … it has an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate leadership on integrity issues and to share those with other sports and federations," Clothier said.

"I am excited by the opportunity I have been given to lead the AIU in rebuilding athlete and fan confidence in how we manage threats to the sport.

"I look forward to working with athletes and all members of the athletics community."

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan says Clothier is well respected in his field and was instrumental in establishing the leagues integrity unit.

“Brett’s appointment as the inaugural Head of the new independent athletics body is a reflection of the respect he has across national and international sport,” Mr McLachlan said.
