St Kilda young gun Hugh Goddard has suffered another injury setback.

Goddard, who has spent 12 months recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, has copped an unrelated injury, hurting the tendons in his big toe.

The 20-year-old hurt his toe in the VFL two weeks ago.

St Kilda's general manager of football performance Jamie Cox confirmed the news.

"Hughie Goddard damaged his foot in a VFL game a couple of weeks ago,” he told saints.com.au.

"He looks to have damaged some of the tendons under his big toe; it’s certainly unrelated to his Achilles, which is good news.

"But the downside is that Hughie is going to catch up with the surgeon tomorrow just to get an update on the severity of his injury."

Barrett compared it to the injury Aaron Sandilands fought with last year, where he played just five games.

"He's now got what the terming, in the layman's terms, turf toe, which was really bad on big (Aaron) Sandilands," he said on Triple M's Rush Hour.

"He's having an official assessment today by the experts, but there is a fear that he is out again for the rest of the year."

Goddard, a highly rated key defender, has played nine games for the Saints.
