Out-of-favour Melbourne forward Jack Watts says he will find it "pretty disappointing" if he has to leave the Demons.

Watts is on the outer at Melbourne, with coach Simon Goodwin confirming he has been encouraged to look at his options elsewhere.

The 26-year-old, however, told reporters on Tuesday morning he wants to stay.

"I’ve been at the club for nine years, love the club, love the boys and I see a really strong future for the Demons," he said.

"It’ll be pretty disappointing if I have to miss out on that.

“We’ve had options the last four or five years, and that love for the boys has kept me there."

Watts suggested the news he could leave had taken him aback.

"(I’m) a little bit surprised," he said.

"That’s footy I guess. It’s a pretty brutal industry.

"(I'm) still getting my head around it. I’m sure it’ll all happen in the next few weeks.

"I’m super confident in playing really good footy wherever that may be. We’ll wait and see."
