Port Adelaide recruit Jack Watts reckons that his new club is closer to winning a premiership than Melbourne.

Watts made the move to Alberton from the Demons in the off-season trade period, headlining a bumper crop of recruits that include Brisbane ex-skipper Tom Rockliff, Geelong goalsneak Steven Motlop, former Melbourne co-captain Jack Trengove, Gold Coast defender Trent McKenzie and North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas.

Watts feels that the addition of quality to Port’s list puts them ahead of the Demons in premiership considerations.

"You know who I think is (closer to a premiership), that's why I'm here," Watts said to afl.com.au.

"It's pretty exciting coming in with the names at this club at the moment, then you add Rockliff and Steve Motlop, it's pretty exciting if we can keep everyone out on the park.

"It's about having that even team contribution.

"You're not going to need one or two players to have 35 (disposals) and Charlie (Dixon) to kick five goals a game.

"We're going to have a really even contribution across the board and we should have a really successful year."

Watts played 153 games for Melbourne for 143 goals before he moved to Port this year.
