Hawthorn assistant coach Brett Ratten has said Jaeger O'Meara is "going okay" with his latest knee setback, but the Hawks have refused to put a time frame on a return to footy.

O'Meara was withdrawn from Hawthorn's side to take on Melbourne with knee soreness.

It is another setback, and perhaps a longer term one.

Hawthorn's general manager of football Jason Burt noted O'Meara will need his knee to feel one hundred percent for "a period of time" before he returns to football.

Ratten was a little more optimistic, saying he will return as soon as possible.

"He's going okay," he told Triple M.

"It's the knock from the Gold Coast game, so it's a separate incident.

"He was one hundred per cent last week, and he just took a bit of time this week, so we gave him right until about 12:00 today, and it just wasn't quite ready to go.

"He'll just work on that and we'll get him back as soon as possible."

Ratten did say it was important to remember O'Meara is a long term prospect for the Hawks.

"I think we do have to be fairly careful with him," he said.

"He's a long term investment for us: we don't need to just wheel him out at 85 or 80 per cent fit, we need to make sure he's right. So we'll look after him."
